Crown Came Off: Preparing for a Dental Visit

  • Do not glue the crown back yourself — it can be damaged and the tooth made worse.
  • Keep the crown and all fragments and bring them to the appointment.
  • Re-cementing is not always possible — the dentist assesses this.

A crown has come off — and the first impulse is to glue it back. Do not do this yourself: first you need to understand what exactly happened. We explain what to bring and how the next steps are clarified.

What happened: the crown came off or the tooth broke

Sometimes only the crown comes off and the supporting tooth stays intact. Sometimes part of the tooth breaks off with the crown. These are two different situations and the further plan depends on which it is.

Examine the crown carefully without cleaning it aggressively: there may be remnants of tooth or material inside. Mention these observations when booking.

What restoration and information to bring

Gathering what you need in advance is the best preparation for the visit.

  • The crown or its parts in a clean container.
  • Documents or X-rays from the previous treatment, if kept.
  • The date of cementation and details of the clinic where it was made.
  • A list of medicines and complaints that bother you.

Do not chew hard food on this tooth while it is exposed — it may be damaged.

Why re-cementing is not always possible

The dentist assesses the condition of the supporting tooth, the integrity of the crown and how accurately it fits. If the tooth has changed or the crown is damaged, re-cementing may be inadvisable. Sometimes the tooth needs treatment, sometimes a new restoration.

That is why we do not promise a “quick repair in one visit”: the decision depends on the examination.

How the service and estimate are clarified after the examination

After the assessment the dentist will explain what is needed: remove remnants, rebuild the tooth, re-cement or make a new crown. In the 2026–2027 price list separate stages appear as separate items, for example “Removal of a dental crown” and “Cementation of a crown/inlay with glass-ionomer material”.

The final amount is stated by the dentist after the examination, before work begins.

What to bring if a crown has come off

  • The crown and all fragments in a clean container
  • Documents or X-rays from earlier treatment
  • Date of cementation and where it was made
  • A description of when and how it happened
  • List of medicines and complaints (pain, sensitivity)
  • Do not glue anything yourself

Save the list and take it with you.

Questions and answers

Can any crown be re-cemented?

No. The dentist checks the condition of the tooth and the crown. If they have changed or are damaged, re-cementing may be inadvisable.

What should I bring if the crown has come off?

The crown itself and all fragments, documents from the previous treatment, the cementation date and a description of the situation. Do not glue anything yourself.
